Sunrise Recovery & Sober Living: Life in Our Supportive Housing

Finding stability in recovery can feel like searching for solid ground after a storm. You've made the courageous decision to seek help, and now you're looking for an environment that supports your healing, rather than hindering it. That’s precisely what our sober living homes, managed by Sunrise Sober Living—our non-profit sister organization—offer in Lancaster, Ohio. This part of our "Sunrise Recovery & Sober Living" series will give you a real look into what life is like within our recovery housing, designed to be a safe haven for your journey.

A Foundation for Recovery: More Than Just a Roof

Our sober living homes for men and women are more than just residences; they are structured, supportive environments where individuals can truly focus on their recovery. We understand that returning to an environment that fueled past problems can derail progress. That’s why our program is intentionally designed to build a strong foundation for sobriety, helping residents avoid relapse by providing a stable, drug- and alcohol-free space. Life here is about fostering positive habits like accountability, independence, and responsibility. It's about creating a sense of community where residents encourage one another, providing a safe haven to concentrate on recovery goals without external interference. We believe this supportive structure is a key component to long-term success for those in Central Ohio and beyond.

Daily Life and Structure: Building Positive Habits

Residents in Sunrise Sober Living homes engage in a structured daily life that supports their ongoing recovery. This includes mandatory attendance at weekly house meetings and other 12-Step or recovery support meetings. These meetings are vital for building a strong recovery community and practicing essential skills in a safe environment.

Daily chores are assigned and must be completed, fostering personal responsibility and contributing to a clean living space. Quiet hours are observed after 9 PM, ensuring a peaceful environment for everyone. Residents are expected to maintain personal hygiene and take care of shared living spaces, with food stored only in designated areas. These guidelines are in place not to restrict, but to create an optimal environment for healing and personal growth.

Community and Connection: You Are Not Alone

A cornerstone of our sober living philosophy is the emphasis on community and peer support. Residents are encouraged to connect with peers in recovery, share insights, and offer encouragement. Our peer support specialists, who have lived experience in addiction and mental health, are there to listen without judgment and share strategies for managing life in recovery. This communal aspect means treating housemates like family, showing respect, kindness, and support to all residents, staff members, and visitors. It’s about building healthy relationships, learning to socialize without substances, and recognizing that everyone is on their unique path to recovery. This collective strength is incredibly powerful, helping residents feel less isolated and more connected to their new, sober lives.

Rules and Guidelines: For Your Safety and Recovery

To maintain a safe and supportive environment, all residents must adhere to a clear set of rules and guidelines outlined in our Housing Handbook. Key aspects include:

Abstinence: Strict prohibition of alcohol and illicit drugs on the property. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted at move-in and based on reasonable suspicion. Medical marijuana is also prohibited while residing in sober living.

Curfew: A 10 PM weekday and 11 PM weekend curfew is in place to maintain structure.

Visitors: Visitors are welcome in common areas from 9 AM to 8 PM, must be sober, and accompanied by the resident. Overnight guests are generally not permitted, with the exception of children (14 and under) every other weekend.

Medication Management: Residents manage their own prescribed medications, which must be stored in a provided lockbox. Certain substances like Kratom and over-the-counter medications containing Codeine are prohibited.

Privacy and Safety: Confidentiality of other residents' information is paramount. Cameras are present in common areas and outside for safety, with footage only reviewed for security purposes.

Good Neighbor Policy: Residents are expected to be respectful neighbors, keep noise levels reasonable, and maintain property appearance.

These guidelines are not meant to be punitive, but to ensure that everyone in the house has the best possible chance at sustained recovery. They create a consistent and predictable environment, reducing triggers and promoting healthy living. Beyond the House: Rebuilding a Life

Life in Sunrise Sober Living is about more than just staying sober within the house walls. It's about empowering you to rebuild a balanced life outside of treatment. Our program phases, from "Ignition" to "Evenlight" (which can be paired with recovery housing) , focus on skill development, emotional regulation, relapse prevention, and ultimately, independent living. We support residents in connecting to external resources for housing, employment, and legal matters through case management.

What kind of positive habits are you ready to embrace in a supportive living environment? How would a structured, sober home help you achieve your long-term recovery goals?
